Sir Syed Day function was celebrated in Sharjah on 1st November 2013. Former union cabinet minister Mani Shankar Aiyar joined as the guest of honor of the occasion. The Vice Chancellor of AMU, Lt. Gen. Zamiruddin Shah was the chief guest. His mission is to generate funds for the development of AMU. Gen. Zamiruddin Shah has set for himself a target of generating Rs. 100 crores in 5 years from AMU Alumni in UAE. “The UAE is home to a large number of AMU alumni who are educated, professional and are making contributions in various sectors. I am delighted to be sharing the joyous occasion of Sir Syed Day with such a large community of Aligarh students in a foreign land,” said Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah . Shah also highlighted the unique relation the UAE has shared with the university over the years. Applauding the historical role of the rulers of UAE in the development of Aligarh Muslim University Gen Shah said “Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, first president and founder of the UAE, visited the university in 1975. His donation then allowed us to establish the Institute of Petroleum Studies and we are eternally thankful for that. The institute has helped produce a large number of engineers and scientists some of whom have come back to work in this country and the region,” In the year 1999, Obaid Bin Saif Al Nasseri, the then Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, visited AMU to receive D. Lit. Degree (Honris Causa), he informed the attendance.
