Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Coach Kelly Okay, maybe - TopicsExpress

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Coach Kelly Okay, maybe this isn’t really about that, but I thought it was a catchy title. I wanted to share something with all of you, because I think a lot of people (particularly ladies) can relate. Picture this: August 1999. North Carolina. 95+ with humidity. First day back to school. Everyone around me wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip flops. Me? I’m wearing flips flops and a t-shirt and JEANS! I vividly (sort of) remember this day. I was sitting in math (who remembers? Geometry, trigonometry, one of those) and I was so hot I could barely focus. All the other kids looked comfortable, warm, but comfortable. I was sweating and really hot. Why was I wearing jeans? I am ashamed to say now that it is because I was ashamed of my legs. I hated how they looked. I hated how “big” my thighs were. Big is a relative term. Knowing the size they are now, I doubt they were actually “big.” I am 5’0” and I wanted long, slender, model legs. I eventually grew out of wearing jeans in the summer. It’s just too hot, but I never grew out of hating my legs… until CrossFit. You might get the impression that I love my legs, wearing short lulus and booty shorts even in the winter… and I do! It’s not because of how they look though. It’s because of what they can DO. Thanks to CrossFit I have unleashed the power of my legs! I love any form of squat! My legs are amazingly strong. I back squat 260# (that’s double bodyweight) and front squat 215#. I can squat clean 183#. CrossFit has helped my self-esteem and confidence so much. I wish I had found CrossFit when I was a teenager and maybe I never would have wasted one minute disgusted with my legs and embarrassed, hiding them in jeans. Until I have kids of my own to empower through CrossFit, I am passing it on to all of you. Life is too short and we are more than just our outward appearance. I hope everyone is able to unleash the power of their ____ (fill in the blank: legs, arms, butt, etc) and be thankful it.
