Sitting alone in a deserted Hong Kong hotel lobby lounge (decorated dubiously with an inauthentic Greco-Roman theme), after 23 hours of being in transit, having watched 6 movies in a row, sipping whisky, served by a lone Chinese girl who (and this happens every time I go to Asia) is slightly puzzled by seeing someone who looks more or less like her sitting alone and drinking, but who clearly isnt looking for, ahem, company...jet lagged, sleep-deprived, yet happy to be half the globe away from what is these days my normal life...closest thing to zen that I can get. If Im going to be alone, I might as well be alone somewhere totally foreign.
