Six-lane flyovers planned at Vyttila, Kundannoor KOCHI: - TopicsExpress

Six-lane flyovers planned at Vyttila, Kundannoor KOCHI: Scrapping the earlier plan of having clover-shaped flyovers at the busy Vyttila and Kundannoor junctions, the national highway wing of the PWD will construct six-lane flyovers on the highway at both these junctions. We have completed detailed project reports (DPRs) and designs of the flyovers based on drafts earlier prepared by Canadian company SNC Lavalin, which was involved in the project, said PWD (NH wing) nodal officer P A Hashim. Since the state government has accorded administrative sanction for the Rs 109-crore Vyttila and Rs 80.2-crore Kundanoor flyovers, the department will launch the construction work at the earliest. The Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) will provide funds required for implementing the projects. Both flyovers will be approximately 770-metres long and have a width of 22 metres. As these are designed as six-lane flyovers, there will be a gap between two bridges which will have three lanes each. Each bridge with three lanes will have a width of 11 metres. We will not wait to complete land acquisition to begin work, he added. The department is planning to keep land acquisition to the minimum and will require land only for the construction of service lanes. Traffic on one side of the four-lane highway will be blocked to facilitate the construction work. After commissioning one side of the flyover, the department will take up work of the remaining half. After comleting the flyovers, we will improve both Vyttila and Kundanoor junctions, Hashim said. At Vyttila Junction, the Kochi Metro rails viaduct will go over the flyover. According to Hashim, this will help the Metro maintain the height when it enters the third or fourth floor of the Vyttila mobility hub where a Metro station is expected to come up.
