Skye Pelicrow shared The BULLY Projects photo. People w Neuro-diversity (thnx David Rosenmiller of MA for introg me to this term last night) are some of the most loving people Ive ever met. In HS, our own token retard, Stephen Holtz (Blinkey from his reaction to so many people--guys mainly--pretending to punch him in the face) was treated with such cruelty that his defensiveness made it hard to see his big heart. However, some apparently did. His yearbook quote reads, Kindness consists in loving people more than they deserve. His inscription to me? ...I am pretty happy to get out of this place... (I was, too; I was, too.) Having a cousin, and working w people w dis-(mixed?)-abilities since my 1st year in college, Ive often thought that most people Ive met are emotionally retarded. In truth, our hearts are all stunted by the dominant Culture of Violence, which, like a sea in which we swim, remains largely invisible. One may argue that were genetically predisposed to mistrust The Other, but the Nature or Nurture debate is over. The research overwhelming shows were a combination of both. Yet, we still dont quite grok that our choices, consciously or unconsciously, affect our genetic future. (Humans separated geographically from others exhibit genetic diversity within the paltry space of 300 years.) We become, in every cell, what we practice. However, our educational system--from everything I hear from my friends kids, as well as my own experience as a sub (human)--still does precious little, besides giving lip service, to teaching compassion. My heart and prayers go out to all who struggle within that system, and within the larger culture, to address our natural God given cruelty, especially since the overarching value of our society is, still and yet, Whoever dies with the most toys, wins. Sigh. Talk about an invisible sea. May we all become more beautiful people.
