Slam Africa? If you weren’t counted as the elite lovers of poetry, music and art on the 10th of August, then Nairobi won’t be your mother mate. As an open chance to size up the recent fashion trends in Nairobi, meet that unknown facebook friend or twitter follower, get to please your male eyes with the wide display of beauty and ladies, you would have whipped your hair back in an attempt to capture the attention of the most handsome men teemed in one area. Well, if you missed all that, Nairobi won’t be your mother mate. I know you are in a goggle as to why I’m all self elated when I say Nairobi won’t be your mother. Just imagine Mufasa Poet, Poet Tear Drops Kevin Vincent, Rixpoet, G-cho Pevu Poet, FlowflaNi Wakaba Ben Benn Kimani and the amazing H_ART the BAND the Band all cradled up in one place, I mean which event in Kenya does that? And to insult Nairobi your own mother, you just saw it wise to miss such greatness! Placed at the 254 garden, the arena was well squared circled with the green, black and red chairs that Boniface Mwangi boasts of. The audience was accompanied by all the pomp of fashion finesse and intellect worth mentioning. The host Poet Tear Drops was in a Larry Madowo(Trendy) green Ankara with designer brown shoes while the beautiful Kori was in pink and black attire and finally I wore a grey Zara shirt, black slim tie with a cream khaki pant and black shoes. The judges were the self proclaimed gods of Poetry and true to that they surely control the nature of writing. They make it rain, quake our hearts with words and just when we think it’s getting too cold, they warm us up with edifying, well crafted and word fitting Poetry. The no nonsense Richie Maccs, The Story Teller Ngartia J Bryanand the King Of Slam Mutuma Dorphan Dennis made the panel complete. 12 Poets gathered their guts and thoughts of self confidence smashed the brain muscles of each contestant as they prepared to battle it LA(for movie lovers). Krazy Mwanafunzi, CEO, Laurah , Glady, Curious, Kelvin, Akuya, YanTeuces, LeAnne, Patto and Obyz . Nairobi my step Mother(Nakuru is my Mother), these Poets brought the trees and the skies down with witty, well placed and straight forward punches of words. To top it all up the dynamic trio assigned the tag of Hosts, kept the audience kicking with the natural flow of humor, prowess in eliciting smiles and a frequent catalyst in mounting up laughter’s from the relaxed group of active listeners. I have never seen such a patient, laid back audience. They sat, cheered, and encouraged eache slammer and performer from the start to end . The basis of being a good host is firmly found in the centre of an upbeat audience who blend with the line of thought the host has. Once a warm breeze of acceptance and belief is felt , then The hosts unleash their Optimus Prime that Megatron cant counter. I take this time to highly salute Tear Drop and Kori Insigne for pulling up the transformation. The 52nd Slam King was later on crowned to Upgrade Poetry’s Akuya Ekorot who was a two time Slammer. He was marveled to the conquer and his ‘talk is not cheap’ line was echoed by his Nakuru die hard followers who had travelled the mile just to support the new King. To brighten the moment , the 51st Slam king Mbunge Aliyeparara and the beautiful XTATIC were there to crown the smiley Akuya as the 52nd Slam African King. Long live Akuya and all the Poetry Kings Kenya brags of. If you are wondering whether I went to a group of schools or the CDF schools, well I went to an Academy and I’m proud of that. Finally to #ElsieMtotoWaBaBa you do have a smile that beautiful fails to describe. Next time though, leave your father behind. cc Clifford Chianga Oluoch you have a daughter sir. To the organizers, the judges, the slammers, the featured poets, the bands and the PAWA fraternity, thank you all for making the art of Poetry to find a place in Kenya. Ian Nonickname Gwaggy Allan Mwangi Melchowistz good work my friends and God bless.
