Slave movie scoops London awards, but can it conquer US Oscars? - Steve McQueens 12 Years A Slave has enjoyed another triumphant warm-up for next months Oscars with success at the London Critics Circle Film Awards. The movie took film of the year, lead actor Chiwetel Eijiofor was crowned actor of the year, while his co-star Lupita Nyongo scooped best supporting actress. Acting luminaries such as Naomie Harris, John Hurt, Gary Oldman and Steve Coogan congregated at Londons May Fair hotel for the ceremony on Sunday. But the awards took second place to one critic, according to director McQueen. Asked whose approval is most vital to him, he replied: My mum, my mum above all! Theres critics, theres scholars, but then theres you mum, so Im very pleased about that. Alfonso Cuaron won director of the year for his 3D science-fiction film Gravity, while Cate Blanchett was named actress of the year for her display in Blue Jasmine. Dame Judi Dench, who scooped British actress of the year, relayed a video message from the set of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2. She said: Making Philomena was a wonderful experience, not least getting to meet Philomena herself. John Hurt presented Gary Oldman with the Dilys Powell award for excellence in film. The evening started on a downbeat note as news of Philip Seymour Hoffmans death filtered through. Film critic Jason Solomons launched the ceremony by paying tribute to the late actor who was named best supporting actor by the circle in 2013 for his performance in The Master.
