Sleeping on the Job! It was beautiful day like this, cloudy and green. It was perfect conditions for sheep to graze the green lush grass without roaming out of sight. I was not the only shepherd out there, my cousin was also nearby with his flock. I had post myself between the flocks, so no mix up happen. The sun was high and it was lunch time, I found me a nice shady spot and took one last glance at the landscape when my cousin came to visit. He was much older but not all there because of years of drinking. Cousin said, “I pushed my flock to head home and I just thought I’d visit for lunch.” I brought the usual, refried beans, tortilla and coffee. He brought cookies, soda, candy, meat potty and crackers. It was evident, I was tired of my lunch and he was tired of his. So, we traded, I had melted chocolate, crackers and soda all over my face. All of the sudden the flock I was caring for looked larger and we both knew what had just happen. I jumped on my horse to sort the mess. We’d spent the rest of the evening sorting ewes and lambs. Mothers and babies were a baling, running around looking for each other in the chaos. It was around four that afternoon, we’d decided to take a break. He had three herds by then; mine, his and ours (mix). During our break, by some miracle, they sorted themselves while grazing and in an orderly manner. Mine headed south and cousin’s headed north, just like that.
