Small minded editorial by Syracuse Post Standard wants to see the bottom line value of an art museum. Asks questions presupposing the rightness of their point of view, namely, cultural identity and pride are non profit products of cultural institutions and in bottom line culture, with every man for himself, and greed has replaced the golden rule, it should not be supported. How caveman? No, that maligns cave culture. But what is the word for such lack of imagination for the human spirit, the wonder of it, and the community derived when we see ourselves reflected in others creations and expressions. When individuals, small businesses and corporations understand this they do give their share to support the Humanities. With a capitol H humanities means not just a secular interest in the art expression, dance recital or pop star of the individuals particular interest, but an interest in all things of human excellence whether its a great vase, a book of poetry or a three point shot. The 3 point shot should not be worth more in human value just because more money goes into the economy. Interviewing people on the street about an art museum probably wont result in any better solutions than the editorial staff has suggested, but the board is made of people who are capable and do see the benefit to the whole community of having a quality art museum in the community. A museum presenting the art of the community and the community artists that live among us, as well as the best from other communities to inspire us. The visual arts are not as widely popular as performing arts and sports and therefore are not money generators of the order of a Syracuse basketball game. All values are not directly represented in the bottom line. Some things need to be supported because they make us better, more whole, happier and more engaged outside our own immediate wants and needs. heres a link to the editorial: syracuse/opinion/index.ssf/2014/01/even_if_the_everson_pays_its_bills_bigger_questions_demand_answers_editorial.html heres a link to The Boards Vice Presidents response: syracuse/opinion/index.ssf/2014/02/everson_letter.html
