Smoking “Weed” – Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You: I suggest you check out a very informative column that appeared in the July 2, 2013 issue of the Wall Street Journal, page A13, by Dr. Samuel T. Wilkinson (a resident physician in the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine) that is titled “Pot-Smoking and the Schizophrenia Connection.” I quote, in part from the article below: “As research accumulates, the emerging picture is that marijuana precipitates schizophrenia or related psychotic disorders in people whose brains are inherently vulnerable to psychosis.” His column offers plenty more – and one needs to digest the entirety of it in order to develop a more thorough understanding of Dr. Wilkinson’s take on the “causal” factors involved and to more fully appreciate the reasoned points he is trying to make. He is not screaming “reefer madness” in some sort of pyrotechnic way – so don’t automatically dismiss this. Rather, I suggest you give his observations careful consideration. I have always believed, what he is warning us of, to be true. I am not a complete naif – I fully understand the “appeal” of this drug, especially to young people, however, one’s mind is the most precious thing one has – and we should not act in a cavalier fashion or with naiveté when considering the use of substances that can seriously impact one’s brain functions. Just a thought that I hope proves helpful to someone out there…
