Snippet from the latest article i just finished... Sport Specific Training Gone Wrong For me way too many people are trying to get fancy implementing sport specific training methods, particularly on clients with far too young a training age for it to have any real transfer. If you cant perform 15-20 push-ups then performing heavy single arm DB bench press with a rugby ball tucked under your opposite arm isnt going to improve your handoff. If you cant land a box drop off then advanced plyo-metrics arent going to be too much use either. Bottom line is if you cant stabilise your shoulder and trunk whilst performing a low level exercise then no fancy pants method will stop you from getting crushed on the athletic field. Lose the idea that if your an athlete you have to make every single exercise mimic your sport. Im all for bridging the gap between the weight room and the athletic field but GPP is sometimes more substantial to specific preparation than SPP.
