Snow! Snow! Snow! Well, okay...not a whole lot of snow. But - TopicsExpress

Snow! Snow! Snow! Well, okay...not a whole lot of snow. But at least we got some, and my Kiwi grandsons got to see the snowflakes drifting downward. That isnt a sight you see very often in New Zealand! The kids were absolutely thrilled. Others were considerably less so. Our deer, who had become accustomed to the lack of white stuff this winter, were shifting their hides irritably while they were eating at our deer feeding station. Evidently they didnt think much of this. My cats, however, were furious. And of course, they blamed me. They are certain that anyone who can do magic tricks like use a can opener on cat food cans and open doors and windows to let them in and out, would have no trouble at all controlling the weather. It is therefore my sole and exclusive fault that it is snowing outside. Julius, my outdoor feral cat who is now friendly, has an igloo outside that has a motion-activated heating pad in it. This keeps him toasty warm at night, but he usually goes out and prowls during the day. Not today. He knows Sissy likes to get in there and exercise squatters rights, and he wasnt going to let that happen. So he stayed in there. Sissy tried her usual Dislodge Julius technique, which is to sit in plain view of him and stare him down. It usually works. Not today. Julius turned his furry orange back and ignored her. She finally stalked away and sat at the edge of the covered deck and glared at the deer. Sasha, who doesnt like being outside even when its only cold, and not wet, got up on the outdoor cooking unit near the big picture window in the kitchen and cried pitifully, tapping a paw on the glass and trying to convince us she was about to freeze to death. Shes a longhaired cat. It didnt work. I felt guilty, but it still didnt work. Callie took one horrified look at the snow and crawled behind the porch swing and stayed there until I let all of the cats back in when it got dark and it was time for Buddy and Talili to go for their run. Lexie, who is still on her diet food and still losing weight slowly, was more philosophical. I guess since shes lost enough weight to be able to wash her little bottom and walk along the deck rail, she doesnt think a little snow is important enough to bother with. She innocently, and unwisely, strolled along the deck, leaving little snow prints, and ignored Sammy. Sammy isnt fond of snow, either, but he has a sense of humor. He got up on the deck railing and walked along it, dislodging a little snow here and there as he did so. He disapproved of my weather, but he still intended to enjoy his day. He spotted Lexie, went into a crouch, and scurried along the deck railing until he was over her. Then he started to leap down on to her. As he did so, though, he slipped. He grabbed desperately with his front claws, which partially saved him, but his rear swung down and slammed into Lexies rear, knocking her, um, posterior over teakettle in the snow. As Sam scrabbled for purchase to get back on the rail, Lexie picked herself up, gave him a disbelieving look followed by one of slit-eyed revenge, leaped at him, and dug both paws, claws extended, into Sams rear. He gained the top of the deck railing with a squawl I heard through a closed door, and promptly fell off the other side! Never a dull moment around here. I wonder whatll happen next?
