So 10 books that have stayed with me: 1. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë: The first piece of real Literature I enjoyed. 2. The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene: The first Nancy Drew Mystery and the first mystery I ever read. 3. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin: A great puzzle that makes me laugh and cry every time I read it. And I read it every year. 4. Peril At End House by Agatha Christie: The first mystery novel whose mystery I ever solved on my own. I was 11. 5. Halloween Party by Agatha Christie. A lesser known Christie I read in a single sitting while running away from home. Poirot solved the murder of a girl my age (which was 13). 6. The Poisoned Chocolates Case by Anthony Berkeley: A stunning mystery from 1929 in which members of an amateur crime club each take turns offering their solutions to a recent murder. 7. Burglars Cant Be Choosers by Lawrence Block: The first Bernie Rhodenbarr mystery, featuring one of my favourite lesbians in fiction. 8. Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams: A detective uses the interconnectedness of all things to his advantage. Also the basis for an enjoyable short-lived BBC series. 9. Thunderball by Ian Fleming: My favourite James Bond novel. Re-read since many times. 10. It by Stephen King: One of the first really scary books I ever read.
