So CAT 2014 will be seen in a new improved Avatar. So what could be logic behind the changes. 1. CAT 14 will be a 2 day affair: For the last 4 years CAT has been held over 20 days with holidays in between, a total window exceeding 30 days. That led 40 different sets of Q papers each being written by 4-5 K people on an average. A massive task for statistical normalization. We had protests and finally court cases last year. This year 4 papers each written by an average of 40k people makes the normalization process much better. Remember statistics 101: Greater the sample size smaller the error. Secondly, when you ask a college to handover their computer labs for an extended period of 30 days, most Engg colleges refused. Only tier 3 (or lower) Bschools agreed hoping to improve awareness among CAT takers. Now with a 2 day window, most Engg colleges would be glad to host the CAT exam. So many centers with good infra. Again, many purists and (oldtimers like me) were worried about quality of Qs in CAT going down. This was the result of having to create 40 x 60 = 2400 Qs + back up. No chance then for creating the kind of thinking Qs that CAT was earlier famous for. Now with only 4 Qs, hopefully they will make a comeback. 2. 100 Qs in 170 min. From a 2002 era of 150 Qs in 120 min, CAT had gradually reduced the Qs/min ratio to 60/140 which perhaps was too much. The mystique of CAT was in part due to smart Q selection and good time allocation. So some much needed emphasis on speed. 3. 170 min flexitime: Part of the charm of old CAT was the Strategy in time allocation and the discipline in sticking to your plan. With 70 min per section, CAt stopped testing a students ability to plan and manage his/her time. Now that makes a come back. So overall the changes are good for the students. Hoping for a Classic CAT 2014. VM students, we will soon change over to the new pattern Mocks and the next Mock will be discussed online so that we can understand the strategy to crack it.
