So.... Coopers 1st therapy sessions went really well. It was a lot of triplicate get to know his medical history with the three different therapists but they were all great. I really got great vibes from them and think they are all the right people to start us down this path. They asked a lot of questions. A LOT of questions... Does Cooper react to your facial expressions, does Cooper make eye contact? Does he grasp objects? bring his hands together? Hands to his mouth? Hands to the bottle? One hand or two? Just to name a few. It turns out as of right now from a developmental & physical therapy stand point he has no delays!!! From an occupational standpoint his only delay is obviously his coordination when it comes to eating which is the reason he had the g-button to begin with. So... A little about what the therapists do..they work with Cooper, hands on and set short and long term goals, write reports and provide strategies on how to meat those goals. For example his PT wants him to be able to hold his head in a neutral position sitting up and when we are holding him at our shoulder for 60 seconds. The strategy is to do more tummy time without the boppy pillow every time. This will have him put weight on his arms and get his core even stronger. They set the goals around our familys life events to make it easier to remember deadlines. So the goal is to have these goals met by Connors birthday in March. His developmental goal is to hold an object in his hand for more than 60 seconds. If he meets the goal in February we set a new goal and so on and so forth. To explain the pictures I am posting a little better... All the therapist mentioned he had a flat spot on his right side. The occupational therapist this morning actually showed me this and said it was easier to see when you are looking down at his head. You can totally see it! She asked which side I hold him on, side he sleeps on, the side I change his diapers on, feed him on etc. all have him bending his head to the right to look at me. Over time the muscles on the left get tight so turning his head to the left is like straining and its sore so its natural to go to the right. The remedy... Start rotating the arm I feed him with, the way his head is facing during sleep and diaper changes. Lastly... For some reason when I thought of ECI and therapy I thought maybe a few times a month, once a week, etc... No.. Its 3x per month per therapist and the Occupational therapist is meeting us at his next swallow study in 2 weeks and depending on the results she may want to see coop 2-3x per week! Along with all his doc appointments this kid is going to be one busy boy! All of the sudden its overwhelming again but we can handle it! Its also very nice that when I return to work therapy will be wherever coop is (ie daycare or grandmas ;) and they will email me the reports, goals and strategies. I can also text them anytime. So if any of you are left reading this very long post, thank you for continuing to care and support us. We are so in love with this boy (as if you couldnt tell ;)
