So Dalton is back in the hospital for Round 7 of treatment. We - TopicsExpress

So Dalton is back in the hospital for Round 7 of treatment. We came in yesterday and will be here until Saturday. Thought I would give a quick update on what we learned at MD Anderson last week on our trip to Texas. At first I thought we were only meeting with his oncologist Dr. Huh but was pleasantly surprised when we got to meet the whole team of doctors. Didnt learn too much from the oncologist besides that MDA and Sloan Kettering in New York are the only two hospitals in the country that really know anything about Daltons type of cancer and how to treat it. There are 50-100 kids diagnosed with his type each year, so very rare. They typically see it in older kids, late teens early twenties. I loved meeting his surgeon! She has performed 60 of these surgeries...her longest being 20 hours, yikes! She said in the past because Daltons cancer is so rare, difficult to treat and difficult to remove many doctors threw their hands up to it..not wanting to do anything for these kids. We looked at Daltons scans..she explained what she saw and she would like Daltons tumor to be half the size it is now:( before surgery. After this round they will scan again and then complete more rounds until the later part of January early February. Also she doesnt believe it is in his pancreas!! She thinks the dilation of ducts is caused from the tumor pushing on it. She said she really wont know all details until she gets in there. So that was great news! The HIPEC will be done immediately following the tumor removal surgery, they will close him up and leave a tube going into his abdomen where the medication will be pumped in and out for 90 minutes. He will have to be in ICU for a couple days following the surgery then regular recovery for a couple weeks with a feeding tube as this abdominal chemo really shocks the system. After he recovers they will begin radiation. When we go back to Texas we will be there for 10 weeks... maybe home a little sooner depending on how fast he heals. I know I said a quick update and believe me it was.... Please continue to pray for Dalton that he keeps the just go with it attitude and strength! Hes doing amazing! #prayfordray
