So Facebook did some research if they could manipulate the mood of users by altering the algorithm that selects the content that is fed to our timelines. Apparently it works. If people are fed depressive updates from friends their posts will become more sour, and vice versa for positive messages. Whod have guessed? So now theyre not just analysing and selling our behavioral patterns to advertisers, soon youll be able to buy entire indoctrination schemes to influence entire networks and the content theyll receive. We show, via a massive (N = 689,003) experiment on Facebook, that emotional states can be transferred to others via emotional contagion, leading people to experience the same emotions without their awareness.
