So... I KNOW Suor Cristina is controversial. And I know that this song is a sensuous description of experiences that, shall we say, only married people really should be doing. Thats why I think this music video is so good. Shes not making music that fits into a standard Christian genre that all too often is boring, cheesy, repetitive, or just too horribly overbearing in its Christianity. Rather: -Shes making beautiful music. And while I have specific ideas about the general cheesiness of most modern songs in the genre she sings, this is far from the cheesiest of songs she could be singing. -Shes making it allegorical. Seriously, from the video it should be pretty darn clear that shes making the analogy of her and Jesus. All the churches in the background, and so on--down to where she finishes the last line of the first refrain like a virgin, with your heartbeat next to mine and the video immediately cuts to a shot of the cross she wears around her neck. -Therefore, what shes doing is taking what could otherwise be a horrible song and sanctifying it. Giving a new perspective--and a beautiful one. Too often culture warriors (and this includes me) want to simply drop everything that comes out of todays evil society. I think we can learn here that not everything from the modern world need be thrown out--there are things of beauty that can be salvaged and renewed in Christ. We arent called to destroy the pagans but to baptize them. They must give up their sin, but the rest can be incorporated into the Body of Christ.
