So, I already posted RIP Robin Williams, but I need to write more. Not only has it been weighing on my mind, but a video of what took place after the curtain call after last nights Broadway performance of Aladdin, has been shared by numerous people, in which the actor who portrays the Genie talks about how Robin Williams, specifically the aforementioned role and his song Friend Like Me, impacted his desire to perform. I could not relate more. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be an entertainer. As my fellow comedians and actors can relate, you learn you enjoy performing by copying what you see in TV and movies and reciting it for other people. Earlier this year, my sister dug out an old home movie where I am 3-5 or so, so she could show her children, ...how goofy Uncle Pat was when he was little (and therefore, how the passing of time does not always lead to change). Somewhere in the middle of this tape, my sister begins filming me and directing me to do the Genie. I then launch into, word-for-word, a recreation of the scene below. The voices, the gestures-I even launch into the beginning of the song and a little bit of the prep for Aladdin to become Prince Ali. Aladdin was the first movie I remember seeing in a movie theater, and it was one I watched over and over again, memorizing more and more of what this blue magical man was doing. If you were to take away the animation though, you still had a magical man. In the home movie, I break character during the song and say something along the lines of Lets just skip this part cause its really hard, and then go to another scene. Maybe now, with a little work, I could recite the scenes like I used to and even get through the whole song, but one thing is for sure; nobody, and I mean NOBODY, will ever be able to do it like Robin Williams. Like the song says, we never had a friend like him before, and we never will again. To the one and only Robin Williams, thank you, and I hope you rest in peace. youtube/watch?v=yWhUHdnsafM
