So I am finally getting caught up with the rest of the world and watching breaking bad. I am almost done with it, and the other day at work I was talking a friend about how much I cant stand Skyler White. My friend was offended and said that is is because I hate women, and then cited some interview the actress gave blaming misogyny for the reason that her character was so unpopular. I tried to explain that I dont like her because she blocks Walts character arch, she stops the show dead every time she is on scene because instead of drug cartel assassins and science/stratagy plots we get to watch her nagging and fighting with walt or having a break down and passive aggressively doing something for attention that ultimately changes nothing and does not move the plot along. I also said that I feel she is sort of written to be hated as she is a hypocrite and weak. She even tells him that she is not as smart as him and so the only option she has is to make dramatic cries for attention to get her way. Why does she stay with him and participate in the crime if she doesnt want to be a part of it? But to my friend none of these points were valid and it was a gender issue no matter what I said, even after bringing up recent feminist literature I was reading and trying to reassure her that I am not trying to draw larger connections to make an attack on the equality movement in general. She ultimately labeled me as male rights activist. My point with this rant I guess is I hate Skyler White at this point in the show but I dont feel like that auto means I hate feminism. Maybe she changes in later seasons, I dont know. And also I think that real equality movements are truly needed and help me to grow and I am thankful for them. But armchair internet warrior versions of these are petty and perhaps even damaging to the cause sometimes. If you arnt careful even good causes can become another place for ego delusion to hide. I know this doesnt really concern you but thanks for letting me write out my thoughts on a soap box.
