So I am sitting here with an old friend of mine remembering some of our childhood experinces and it is in hindsight that we have had to analyze some of the things that were done to many of us young girls when we were growing up in the village. Our elders had developed a very cunning system of checking whether girls are pregnant or not pregnant. When a girl reached adolescent age, the mother would always send an elderly woman to do an abdominal search which involved using the fat of a sheep to massage the stomach area (gukurwa mbaru). The massage or (guchocorua) would be done so professionally that the if a girl was pregnant, the information would be relayed to the parents using coded language. It is now that I realize that whenever the old woman declared one as free from any stomach disease (murimu wa ivu) it meant that the girl was not pregnant. When I go to our village I still see the old ladies who used to do this to us...The wisdom of our forefathers.
