So I graduated from THS a few years ago, and I still read some of the posts from this page that pop up on my newsfeed. I have some advice for those of you struggling with stress/grades/parents etc. Take it or leave it. For some credibility, I graduated with a 4.1 on the weighted scale and am at UMich. Or 4.2. I dont remember. Youll realize how your high school GPA means nothing after you enter college. 1) Despite what I just said, your grades now do matter… but not in the sense that you would think. High school is the time for you to start learning who you are as a student, so don’t waste your time lazing around. Take classes that challenge you, discipline you, and help you grow. If you try your best, you will be surprised at how smart you are. 2) AP classes. Take them, take the test if the credit transfers to your desired university. I took quite a few, and saved myself sooo much money, as in probably over $13,000 because I didn’t have to waste my first semester or two taking those classes at UMich. 3) Stop stressing, start doing. Sitting at a desk and thinking about how much stuff you have to do doesnt actually count as studying. Block out the negative thoughts, you can do it with some practice, I promise. 4) Appreciate your parents. They may not realize the little importance of every single assignment/quiz/etc., but they do want whats best for you. When they yell down your throat, just try to take a deep breath and ignore it, and maybe even try to appreciate that you have parents who care about your academics. 5) Appreciate your teachers. A lot of the teachers at THS are amazing (Mrs. Forshey was probably my favorite). They actually care about you, and make you want to learn the material. In college, it takes so much effort to get a professor to simply recognize your face. Nevertheless, I know that there are some teachers that suck… but its no excuse to not do well in the class. They will still give you all the materials you need to learn, they just wont teach it to you. So read the books, do the homework, and learn it yourself. 6) Strive to be the person you want to be, not the person you are. If you want to be good at math, but you currently arent great at it, dont use Im just not good at math as an excuse to stop trying. Keep practicing, learn where youre going wrong, push yourself, and you will improve. 7) Remember to have fun. Do things that make you happy, dont do things to impress other people. Its such a simple thing, but a lot of people dont do it enough. As Im sure you all know, you guys are so lucky to being going to THS. Your time there is so short, make the most of it.
