So I have been pinged by Mila Sola and Denice De Guzman to put my movie list. It is very difficult to have just 10 movies out of all movies I have seen, especially since I love Asian film as well as Western. So, I will cheat and make two lists: Western world: 1. Robert Wienes The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Masterpiece of silent era. There are few others from the era that I adore like Metropolis and Modern Times. It would be difficult to say exactly which one is my top top favourite, so am cheating and putting all three to number one. 2. Ridley Scotts Blade Runner, A masterpiece, father of cyberpunk, a really unique experience. Every time I watch it, I find something new. I can put here The Matrix too, it is in the same genre of cyberpunk. Though very different experience, I truly love both movies. 3. Andrei Tarkovskys Stalker. Tarkvoskys films are slow pace and mesmerizing. From all of them, Stalker was my favorite. The atmosphere, the tension, everything in the film was so... different. 4. Sidney Lumets 12 Angry Men. An exploration of human character and how much our justice systems are dependant on circumstantial things. 5. Dr. Strangelove: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. I love Kubrick and this one along with The Clockwork orange are my top favorites. A dark humour tale of the Cold War. 6. Amadeus Milos Formans interpretation of the great Mozart. Though it is not story of a genius, it is a story about mediocre. 7. Man with a Moving Camera. Dziga Vertov belonged to a movement of filmmakers, who believed that cinema should not be narrative based. This film is a monument of those ideas. 8. Psycho. I love Hitchcocks films and this one was such an important one in film history. 9. Snatch by Guy Ritchie and Whatever works by Woody Allen. I just simply love watching these. Both directors I really like. 10. Videodrome I am big fan of David Cronenberg and Videodrome encompasses so much in it. The best of early Cronenberg. Asian film: 1. Rashomon, my favorite from Akira Kurosawa. 2. Valley of Flowers Pal Nalin made two masterpieces, Samsara is the other one. Both movies are amazing. 3. Oldboy - Park Chan-wooks epic of revenge. 4. Hero - I love Zhang Yimous movies Ju Dou, Rise the Red Lantern. Hero is one that is perfectly crafted in so many aspects. 5. Princess Mononoke - it is not exactly a movie, but this animation can easily stand in the same line of cinematic masterpieces. My favorite of Hayayo Miyazaki. 6. The Hole - Tsai Ming-Liang is not an easy director. He never compromises. If you accept his terms, only then you can enjoy his films. The Hole is my favorite. 7. 2046 by Kar Wai Wong. Collaborating with cinematographer Christopher Doyle, Kar Wai Wong created some masterpieces like In the Mood For Love and 2046. 8. 3 idiots. I have to admit I love movies with Aamir Khan. I can have a list if 10 just listing movies he appears at - like Rang De Basanti, Lagaan and Mumbai Diaries. 3 idiots was the one that introduced me to this great actor and director and Bollywood cinema in general. 9. Memories of Murder by Bong Joon-ho. Researching this movie opened a part of Korean history I was not familiar with. 10. Seom or The Isle by Kim Ki-duk. One of the most original directors out there Share your movies TOP 10s: Mel Panabi, Shuhei Koyama, Modesta Naciute, Emiliano Abreu, Fadz Yusof and Jennifer Lam
