So, I have now restocked, or ordered, whelping supplies in anticipation of the blessed event. This time, I hope I get to use them! We ended up with a c-section with Cassies first litter. Im hoping this time her hormones kick in and she actually goes into labor. Though its scary, I love helping the babies arrive, scrubbing them down, making them squeak and cry, giving them back to mom to lick all over, watching them latch on and nurse like crazy. Cassie, who had apparently decided she wasnt going to whelp even if she was 64 days along and her temp had dropped to 98 degrees 26 hours before, went to sleep in utter ignorance and woke up with crying little aliens lying next to her, and she wanted nothing to do with them! After I held her down for a couple of group visits to the milk bar, the light bulb went on and after that she was a wonderful mom-dog. But I far prefer when they have them on their own and you feel like youre doing something, instead of merely watching a vet remove puppies from an unconscious mom on an operating table.
