So I have received more than a few emails asking about acting in Houston and what it takes to grow as an actor... I am no authority or claim to be on that at all. However, I can share what I feel are key elements to growth and the opportunity to learn and network. I am not the best or worst actor. I am probably about average but feel I am growing with each project. 1. My job is supportive and flexible. Thank you Margaret Foss and City Kitchen so much! They allow me the chance to audition and get out there. I am more available than most. I feel that is my true advantage over many others in Houston. 2. NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK!!!! Dont be an annoying person but definitely put in the time to attend film mixers and participate in social media. 3. Get a reputable acting coach! Next Level Acting Studios - Deke Anderson & Elsa Ward is the only class I have attended and its awesome! I look forward to trying out many of the other classes in town someday. 4. Participate in the various local festivals like SplatterFest, Houston 48 Hour Film Project and Houston 24 Hour Film Race - learn from others and network! 5. Be a POSITIVE impact on set! Your shit does stink, so appreciate everyone! Nobody can do it alone. Everyone is valuable! Contribute and be PREPARED and ON TIME!!! I always get to set early. Schedules are already a challenge for most projects, so be that person they can count on. Hold a boom if you must... Help carry items... Offer to help so you can learn... The more you know in front of and behind the camera the better. 6. Listen, Listen, Listen... I need to work on this area a lot! I tend to joke a bit too often on set... Its my kryptonite! Humor is my oxygen and often times it is not appropriate :( I am trying to find my halo, I promise! Muwahahahaha! 7. DO the work... Be an extra! Help out projects that are looking for extras! It is a GREAT way to network and they will appreciate it! These people make films and will remember that when it comes to audition considerations. 8. I am still learning the rest... I have my go-to people that I reach out too that mentor me so to speak... Find your own mentors! You cant have mine :) Please feel free to add your thoughts! I guess its obvious that you can read a book about all this. There just arent enough pictures in most books for me :)
