So I have to get this off my chest....okay, so our new University name is UTRGV and our new mascot is VAQUERO. This is the decision that was made, after many people fought hard to stop it from taking away the Bronc legacy,unfortunately as we have seen in recent decisions the outcome may or not be what we want. I understand both sides, i see how it would have been nice to keep our mascot, as it does allow gender equality in sports and continue the legacy many alumni have graduated with. I do feel that we need to stay strong as being Americans in the United States and fighting was apart of it. Being more of an English speaker myself I can see the downfalls of this new name and the pronunciation. I can see that we need to assimilate ourselves into the U.S. society, but still keeping a little part of our ethnicity is not a bad thing.Props to everyone who tried, but dragging it along now isnt gonna bring it back, its only gonna bring more resistance. What we need to do is stop worrying about a name adjustment, and start being grateful that we even have a university to call our own. After a discussion in class today, I have learned to comply with this change and see the optimism to this. Let us be proud that the Hispanic heritage is finally being recognized and will be remembered every time our college goes and competes or is mentioned. Let us be proud of the majority culture we have in the valley, not trying to bring it down for being Spanish or different from what the perspective is of others. Sure not everyone is of hispanic decent, yet in the RGV statistically this is who we are and who our ancesors were, and last I heard college was for recieving a good education and making memories with the people you meet along the way. #bandwagonofproudsupporters
