So, I heard today that a person I considered a friend, got a job working for Belfast City Council. While I wish him well for his employment, it brings into focus a certain vested interest I have. People employed by local government have access to intelligence data through RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers). This gives them unrestricted access, without the requirement of a court warrant, to various bits of information they wouldnt normally have access to. Information such as my internet browsing history, which my ISP has to hand over to any RIPA authorized persons. Same for telephone records, etc. Its part of the anti-terrorism legislation. To this effect, I believe that only actual British people should hold local government jobs. All local government jobs are RIPA authorized. Why would I want any BRITON being able to access that information without a warrant, let alone a foreign national? I dont. I dont want anyone having unwarranted access to that kind of information, but since the government decided that local government should, then local government should only be British people. Its a compromise of sorts. When I simply said that in my opinion, local government should be British people only, his response was a rather arrogant.... I wont discuss that with you. Which I find incredibly offensive, as I am guessing that he made various assumptions about my reasoning (UKIP etc), and this is exactly TYPICAL of the kind of person who SHOULDNT have unwarranted access to intelligence data.
