So, I just finished Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, the first of the Sevenwaters Series. I absolutely love, love, love this series. The book is based on the Six Swans fairy tale with some Celtic lore added in. Sorcha and her 6 older brothers grew up basically alone in the forests surrounding Sevenwaters. Their mother had died when Sorcha was born, and their father, Lord Colum, was constantly off on a new campaign fighting the never ending war between the Irish and the Britons. A war that had been going on for many generations. That is, until an evil sorceress cast a spell over Lord Colum and became his bride. The Lady Oonagh. Deciding the children could eventually undo the spell she had over their father, Oonagh cast a spell turning the 6 brothers into swans. This set Sorcha on a path that would lead her on an unbelievable journey aided by the Fair Folk. A journey to save her brothers, that would take her to the land of the Britons, that would eventually find her love. After the Lady Oonagh cast her curse, the Fair Folk intervened. Sorcha was told to craft 6 shirts from starwort - a prickly plant that causes the skin to swell and burn. And she must do this in complete silence. Not a single piece of her story could be told. This book can definitely be a little long-winded, a little slow. Especially after youve read it a few times. I think its definitely worth a read though. It has a way of sharing with the reader a little bit of each part of the emotional spectrum. Id recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy books. Now its on to Son of the Shadows!
