So I just heard that giving women self defence classes is supporting rape culture. Why? Because we are not teaching men not to rape. Yes, we do actually, its just that not all men listen. Some men are freaking sadistic and want to rape people. Lets look at this in a different situation Stop teaching people to lock their doors because it supports thief culture. Why? Because we are not teaching thieves not to steal. Lets be even clearer just so I dont get yelled at for victim blaming. This is not victim blaming. This helping potential victims not be victims and if she fails to defend herself despite the fact she tried, then it is NOT her fault. Its that simple. Self defence is to lower the probability of the negative outcome. THATS ALL. So, the logic is… 1.) Teaching people to defend themselves is supporting rape culture. 2.) We tell women to learn how to defend themselves 3.) Therefore, we are supporting rape culture. So, despite the fact this being philosophically unsound it is still an informal argument because you could apply this syllogism to any other situation. Take this for example. Its the EXACT same logic, just different words. 1.) Teaching people to lock their doors is supporting thief culture 2.) We teach people to lock their doors at night. 3.)
