So I just watched Sonic Boom, episode 1, and I got three things to say about it; 1) Never has a 3D animated show evoked the feeling that I was watching ReBoot as strongly as this before. The gags (visual and language-wise), the overall flow of the plotline, EVERYTHING reminded me of early seasons of ReBoot. Which leads me to point 2... 2) Nothing in this show felt like Sonic in any way, shape or form. The entire cast has completely shifted personalities from the original Sonic games (and yes, they did have personalities back then, as shown in the manuals and so forth, even if they couldnt speak), a process that started with Sonic Adventure and has reached full completion with this series. This is the problem with wayyy too many shows/games/movies nowadays that use older IPs (Crash Bandicoot is another good example, as is TMNT); people get the characters and just slap them on a given scenario. You cant just get Mario and slap him into a bloody FPS game and expect it to mesh well, much like you cant get Sonic and co. and slap them into a gag-a-minute, 4th wall breaking, comedy action show and expect it to mesh well. Which leads me to my final point... 3) Holy crap, did the directors/animators for this show get hired onto this as their first project? Theres so many animation screwups I dont even know where to begin, first off being a total lack of acknowledging physics whatsoever. Yes, I know Sonic in general never really acknowledged them, but I mean, heres some examples; -Sonic falls in the water, Tails cant lift him up because Sonics waterlogged. So Tails falls in with him, and then, when theyre BOTH underwater (hence waterlogged) Tails is able to somehow rocket them 100 feet out of the water no problem. -When Sonic runs, hes going something like hundreds of miles an hour visually, but his legs are only moving at about the speed of a regular dude running down the street. -Same for Tails, when he flies, his tails barely cycle/spin. -Bizarre space/time warping happens in multiple instances, like when Sonic and Burn-Bot are leaping *directly* towards each other over a crevice, Sonic grabs an energy rope from Tails in his plane (which is going the same direction Sonic is) and then somehow proceeds, in half a second, to swing AROUND to the side of Burn-Bot, kick him TO THE SIDE, and continue moving/flying this way. I mean, for me personally, if the total feel of the show didnt make me hate it, these weird instances just drove the point home that this is easily the worst Sonic animated series ever made, even worse than Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Why doesnt anyone go look up viewer ratings for Sonic animated series, see that SatAM pretty much obliterated every other animated series in ratings by a landslide, and then go gee, maybe we should try to emulate the success of that show by doing what that show did and not making the cast out to be a bunch of cocky, arrogant, braindead idiots?
