So I know I have been speaking a ton about my Directorial concept of my film Spit, but what I have not been discussing is my approach to playing the lead role of Monk One, which will easily be the most challenging acting performance of my career. A lot of it is me, but within that analysis I have been taking reference points from my influences to get a better understanding of how my subconscious came up with this screenplay and these characters. Monk is a mix of a Jazz or Blues musician and what I refer to as the Sage Emcee, its Dexter Gordon or Pharoah Sanders meets the The Gza, a Saafir or Butterfly (who were both emcees who I always felt had the soul of what Gil Scot Heron called Bluesicians) These are some of the visual references I am working with.
