So, I never thought I would have two statuses about professional wrestling this week, but life has a weird way of working these things out. And I certainly never thought I would write something like this. Jim Hellwig, more famously known as the Ultimate Warrior of WWF fame, has passed away. He was 54. The Ultimate Warrior had just been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on Saturday and made an almost farewell like appearance on Monday Night Raw last night. And now, hes dead. Its really surreal how this all happened. He was alive and well the night before, and just like that hes now gone. Ive had an interesting relationship with the Ultimate Warrior character in my life. Ive known of him for about as long as I can remember. My older brother Sean, who was a professional wrestling fan before me in my family, owned a little rubber Ultimate Warrior action figure along with many other wrestlers. And I vividly remember a photograph of my dad costuming as the Ultimate Warrior, complete with muscular physique and the iconic face paint. The Ultimate Warrior was my dads favorite wrestler, and he was definitely a wrestler we all loved in my familys household and a favorite in many, many others. From the outside looking in, the Ultimate Warrior character is best described as animalistic and crazy. From shaking the ring ropes to rambling interviews, he was written off by skeptics as an insane nutjob. But Hellwigs character had a larger than life appeal to him. Like many comic book superheroes, the Ultimate Warrior character, in my opinion, symbolized so many ideals encapsulated into one man. He stood for realizing the inner potential of what people could be. He stood for persevering towards your dreams when everyone around you said, “you can’t do that, that goal is too high.” And he stood for people having an intense, passionate inner belief in something. If you didnt have that fire inside of you that people could see so evidently on the outside, how would you be remembered? How would you make a mark on this Earth? How could that fiery spirit carry on? It wouldnt. The Ultimate Warrior reinforced that. And I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that his Warrior spirit will indeed live on forever. Thank you, Ultimate Warrior, for everything that you have done in your lifetime. God bless you and and God bless your family in this troubling time. May you rest in peace.
