So, I received a letter in the mail today from my lovely state of Illinois Child Support Enforcement Division asking me if I would like them to continue assessing interest to the back child support owed ($80,000+) from my ex-husband. If I do, and money is actually paid (snicker, snicker) the state will send me a 1099-INT as tax on that interest collected will need to be paid by ME. Theres part of me that gets this, but then I thought, isnt it double taxation? Presumably he would have already paid taxes on money earned, then I would in turn be taxed again. And theres the issue with all the interest I had to pay on medical bills, etc because even though he was legally responsible to pay those bills, he never did and I would end up paying late fees and interest. I need to research and see if other states do this. I guess in reality I never have to worry about it. Hes managed to game the system this long....
