So I saw the most amazing thing today and began to realize how kind and generous we are as a nation, especially during this holiday season. Pulled over at a local mom and pop gas station / convenience store in the town of Artesia New Mexico today to grab a snack and something to drink. Standing in line in front of me was a rather large man who must have weighed easily 300 pounds and could not have been more than 29 or 30 years old. Next to him was a younger girl who also was a bit overweight. On the counter in front of them was an extremely large amount of junk food: candy bars, doughnuts, potato chips and other assortments of candy. They also had a couple of Rockstar energy drinks and a case of soda. Where the generosity comes in is that they were buying these things with food stamps. Yes, I said food stamps. After they were finished buying the junk food with the food stamps the man put down a lottery ticket which had a couple of dollars on it and used that money to buy cigarettes. As I was paying for my items, I watched as they went outside and got into their vehicle which was a fairly new large American made truck and I noticed that the truck had real expensive rims - the kind that people drive on the roads to show off and are worthless off road. The part I dont get is that in the town of Artesia, there are signs everywhere hiring people for work... there is definitely no shortage of jobs in this town where the oil and gas industry has been booming. But yet these two people who could afford a nice truck with expensive show off rims, these people who could afford to buy lottery tickets, were spending our hard earned tax payers dollars by using food stamps to buy junk food. Yes, we are an extremely generous and stupid nation to allow this to happen!
