So, I see Joss Stone has recorded a Poppy Appeal single with Jeff Beck, the Eric Bogle classic No Mans Land, with the Royal British Legions backing. All very commendable on the face of it, although Im not keen on the way Ms Stone overdoes a song. Why, though, have they omitted the most powerful verse... with one of the strongest anti-war messages ever committed to song...? Staggering... These are the words missing: And I cant help but wonder, now Willie McBride, Do all those who lie here know why they died? Did you really believe them when they told you the cause? Did you really believe that this war would end wars? Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame The killing, the dying, it was all done in vain. For Willie McBride, it all happened again, And again, and again, and again, and again. And heres the definitive version, by the great June Tabor... youtube/watch?v=cWhOO9Q323Y
