So I seen this gate open and decided to have a nose. The Graveyard of St Werburghs church. I was passing the Church and noticed a few lads having a tea break at the open gate which led to the Ancient historical Graveyard, I often wished I could have a look inside , So I says to myself Nothing ventured nothing gained..as I bluffed my way in and left the lads chewing on their sandwiches. I walked along the narrow passageway and into the clearing and there was the historic graveyard which im guessing held less than a hundred headstones of all shapes and sizes some buried here in the 1600s. As I took my time rambling around I was disgusted that I couldnt get to read the names or years, as the lettering was worn by both age and weather.BUT one I was delighted to be able to read was of Major Sirr the feared and infamous Fenian hunter who along with his followers captured-tortured-murdered many a patriot in his day. It was Major Sirr who captured Lord Edward Fitzgerald who im glad to say has the comfort of the Crypt in St Werburghs, while the Infamous Sirr and his family lie in the graveyard unloved and uncared for...It felt a bit strange standing by his Grave this morning,I wondered who, or how many stood around it that morning in 1841 as he was lowered into the earth, I also wondered did the gravediggers dig out an extra few shovel fulls just to get the bastard closer to the hell that he deserved. As for Lord Edward, his remains were brought to the Church in Darkness, only one person allowed mourn him,one Lady Louisa Connolly of Castletown House .he was deprived a fancy coffin which his status deserved, to add insult to injury the initials E.F scrawled into the cheap wooden coffin which was provided, the initials been the only tribute paid. This would never have been made known only for a nosy old man who lived nearby had recognised the Lady, his curiousity got the better of him and he crept in to sneak a peek at the coffin...sometime later he would tell the story of the late night encounter, it would get back to the Fitzgerald family who had been exiled when Fitzgerald was arrested. I then rambled out delighted with myself as I strolled in the general records office next door..finding a marriage cert for a lady in Englands Grandparents, along with my own Great grandparents marraige cert was a bit of an anti-climax if im to tell the truth.
