So I took my own advice and gave my Pop Pop a call just now and we chatted of times before the War. WWII that is. We think we have it so tough. My family is from the Coal Regions of Pennsylvania and basically a bunch of Coal Crackers. Think about this, my Grandfather grew up during a time when they Received,.. Light from a Kerosene Lamp, Heat from Coal or Wood Stove, Fruit and Vegetables from the many trees Apples, Plums, Pears or their own Garden. Slept in a Room without heat. He said that if they were talking and it was to Cold the words would Freeze and they would have to wait til morning for the words to Thaw!! Sleeping 4-5 in a bed for heat, talk about a close family. No Running water in the House, until after the War. BTW they did get that in 1948. To relieve yourself it was a Stinky Outhouse. BTW sometimes theyd would have to wait til morning or the pee would freeze. LOL!!! His words not mine. He went off to WWII to fight the Nazis signing up right after Pearl Harbor. A Combat wounded Veteran from the beginning of the War til the end. A veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. When he got home it was back to the mines and then married my Nana and they opened up a small business. Selling Sewing Machines and Fabric. Quite the lucrative business when you think how many people made their own clothes, not made in China. His Family was removed from their Home in the fifties by BIG BUSINESS, the Mining Company, They ripped up the fruit trees and his house causing the family to relocate. BTW it, the Mine, didnt produce. He is a Proud American and an Amazing Human Being. I am VERY PROUD to have him as my Grandfather!!! He will be 90 years Young this January!!!
