So I was complaining to Dr. Vella today about how ferrets are so - TopicsExpress

So I was complaining to Dr. Vella today about how ferrets are so prone to disease and he said something that made me feel a bit better. He said that pretty much all animals have diseases that they are prone to, even us human animals too, so really ferrets arent too different. We are prone to cancers, obesity, heart disease, etc etc and ferrets are prone to their insulinoma, lymphoma, etc...it made me feel a tad better knowing that ferrets arent some kind of diseased freaks of nature (it just feels that way sometimes! haha). What we can continue to do is to look after them and care for them as best we can, hopefully prevent some diseases from ever happening through proper nutrition and care and keep educating ourselves on looking after them better and better. We dont know everything about ferrets, there is still lots of room for improvement and we just need to continue educating ourselves and keep doing as best as we can :) Unfortunately a lot of diseases come down to the luck of the draw when we get a new ferret. Some ferrets may never get sick in their lives, while others will. We just need to do what we can to prevent the diseases and focus on proper management of the diseases when they get them. I used to think that my ferrets would never get sick because I felt I was doing everything right. Then when Sammy got insulinoma I felt like I failed somehow as a farent and just could not understand how it could have happened to my ferret. Now I just accept the fact that ferrets are prone to certain illnesses and as long as I am doing the best of my ability there is not much more that I can do. I educate myself, Im immersed in the ferret community, I have overhauled their diet, I care for them and love them...what else is there to do? Just accept that shit happens sometimes, do your very best and be grateful for every moment that you get to spend with them and most importantly LOVE them :) P.S. Sammys blood tests came back really good and even though Binxi probably has Lymphoma she is still her normal self, just sleeping a bit more. She is happy and healthy apart from that. The way we found out that she probably has Lymphoma is through swollen lymph nodes. Apart from that she is all good! :D
