So I was out front, pulling some flowers out of their pony-packs and planting them - rows of them to replace two dead plants that didn’t make it over the summer’s heat. A helicopter kept circling overhead. It reminded me of living in San Leandro when the Oakland Police helicopter would on occasion help the police search our creek for bad guys. Sonja was taking a break from work and came out front to check my progress. Since this neighborhood has a home owners association with rules about changing anything on the front of the house, I jokingly said that someone must have seen me planting unauthorized flowers and called the cops. This is after I’d been looking in the back yard all along the fence at sprinkler heads to possibly swap with the ones in the front. I was loosening a micro sprayer head as I was telling Sonja that someone must have called the police on me and her eyes were telling me that someone was approaching me from behind. Just as a man’s voice began to speak, I turned the sprinkler head too far and it shot off into the air and I had to hold my hand over the head so as to keep us all dry. It was a Riverside County Sheriff. Aha! They did call the cops!! Apparently someone driving on Dinah Shore Drive thought that they saw someone jump the wall into our gated community. The helicopter was sent out to search for the perb. The officer said, “We saw you looking over the wall, did you see something, sir?” Meanwhile I am sort of turning his way but also concentrating on keeping us all dry. “Actually I was looking for sprinkler heads. And we can’t see over the wall - it is too tall,” I stammered. Then as the officer is walking away I decided I should explain, so I yelled in his general direction, “The reason I’m holding my hand over this sprinkler is that the head flew off...” wondering why I was saying anything at all...as he walked away...probably wondering why I’d been let out of the nut house too soon...
