So I was the one who made the last post about #BlackLivesMatter, - TopicsExpress

So I was the one who made the last post about #BlackLivesMatter, and I didnt think it would spark that much dialogue. Let me clarify: in no way was I trying to condemn white people participating in engaging social issues. I was specifically referring to social media. Ill give another example: its like that guy who uses feminism not because he actually cares about gender equality, but rather because hes simply trying to get laid. Weve all seen him. Ive seen several of them here on campus in my years here. Maybe its a daring hypothesis to say this: but if I were a woman, it would probably just make me more separatist. Ive intimately become familiar with CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS here at Earlham. And Im starting to wish I never did. These people NEVER TALKED ABOUT, much less posted on their individualized social media accounts, anything about racial issues, but are now only since its the hot sociopolitical topic of the moment. They need to go SO FAR OUT OF THEIR WAY to prove that THEY (unlike their possibly more conservative ancestors) are on the proper, liberal side of the debate, since they are surrounded by them in their immediate peers. If you are white and attend these rallies, good for you. If you wish to examine these systematic oppressions rather than further affirm them, great! But do it without shamelessly, or even unconsciously, taking up the white savior mentality. Yes its not about white people, but with social media, some of you just happen to make it about a WHITE PERSON, YOURSELF. Maybe yall are doing it unconsciously. Only you know for sure. Rachel and Ari, I wasnt trying to condemn participation in social issues. The main point I was trying to make was PERFECTLY summarized by Rosalind in the following, theres a very fine line between supporting a cause that does not have a direct effect on your life and doing things for the sake of whatever image of yourself youre trying to present to the world, a line that sometimes I dont think people are even necessarily aware theyre crossing.
