So I was thinking about this recently and I dont understand the opposition to universal health care. From a liberal perspective, everyone has access to free healthcare creating a safety net for people in need of care without the fear of bankrupting themselves in the process. From a conservative/capitalist perspective it promotes competition between hospitals leading, in theory, to reduced prices for hospital care. Exchange competition between insurance providers to competition between hospitals. The current system says ok you may visit two of these hospitals in your area. Essentially once you choose a provider you are a captive audience for those hospitals. Those hospitals are competing with none of the other health care providers in the area because the people they serve cant go to them (easily or cheaply) anyways. Imagine on a small scale if every person in New York could enter any hospital in a 50 mile radius. The most expensive hospitals are going to see some of their patients using other services and thus force them to reduce prices. Likewise this could allow for certain hospitals in an area specialize more heavily in certain areas and become the go-to location for that particular service. Hospitals could become a choice for the consumers like going to Target instead of Walmart, or BestBuy instead of OfficeMax. Any other thoughts?
