So I went out to the garden just before dark, and was working my way down the row picking beans. I noticed that the netting I have put up around the sweet corn (to keep out freeloaders) was laying on the ground. So I proceeded to pick it back up and spread it back out---and when I did, up came a young 3-foot black snake right along with it. It had gotten itself threaded through the netting for about a foot before it could go no further, and was slowly being suffocated. Ran and got the scissors with the sharpest points and with great care snipped away the unforgiving nylon strands. The snake began to revive and move around, but when it came down to cutting the last two strands around his face, he (or she) held perfectly still. I snipped them off, and he backed away from the net, still bearing a few crease marks from the traumatic experience. My good deed for the day.
