So, Im bringing politics back on the table. Heres an exchange from a friend of mine, who Ive known since I was 7, hes Black, and he used to work for Condoleza Rice. You can imagine, since we are both from DC, our conversation can get pretty warm. He wrote me today. So what? No congratulations on GOP victories? To which I replied. Actually, congrats. I was thinking about all this before the elections and it really doesnt matter, because the system is clearly broken. Still, I voted, but taking an objective look at the history of American politics, its been bad since The Revolution. Partisanship is awful and only gotten worse. The fact that both of the major parties in this country lie, that they both bad mouth and block one another is just like having parents that hate each other. The only reason I vote democrat is that they at least have a track record, better than any republican since Teddy Roosevelt, for doing good for America as a society. Not just the wealthiest of them. But all of them. Also, the republicans uncivil behavior towards this President is just not good for the country. It does violently underscore the embedded racism that we live with. And I defy you to find me ten public programs instituted by a republican president other than the EPA which another three republicans tried to dismantle, that actually make Americans better than they found them. So. Yay. Congratulations. Now watch them sit like a bunch of bullies for the next two years and insure the election of Hillary Clinton because they, meaning Republicans, some of whom like you, are cherished old friends of mine, but as representatives will fight progress for the greater good so hard they will make utter asses of themselves and so sicken the country theyll loose the White House again and both the house and the senate. Why? Because so few American politicians are in it to serve the country. If thats even possible. We are a republic of states. A federation of fifty different countries if you go back to what the Founding Fathers thought of America and because of that special interest is built into our governing. If they, meaning republicans, could only do something that was better than theyve shown me in the last forty years Id switch in a heartbeat. But no, they continue to mire us in blood, money, and oil. And all that is very, very hard to wash off of ones hands. By the way, have you found a job, yet? And he wrote back I love you, too.
