So Im new to Missouri gardening. And, this is the first time - TopicsExpress

So Im new to Missouri gardening. And, this is the first time gardening again in almost 10 years...back then, it was back in Florida. This is not ALL my gardens I started this year, just a small portion of it. But had to take drastic measures this week. I have cucumber beetles, squash bugs, and whiteflies (whose population has died down some). Honestly, I had no idea what a cucumber beetle or a squash bug was before I came to Missouri and started gardening again this year. So it took me 2-3 weeks to figure out what my problems were. In the meantime, my cucumber plants leaves have suffered pretty hard...though the plants seem to still thrive, and my zucchini hasnt produced a single fruit yet. I also have some Green Bell Peppers that just dont seem to want to grow, theyre poor little leaves inundated with little holes. So....needless to say, I took some drastic measures today, after trying all the advertised organic ones and nothing working, and used Sevin Dust. Cross your fingers for me it works to kill the pests, as everything I read on Missouri Extension office and other gardening forums stated theyre pretty tough to get rid of. I initially started the soils with a form of lasagna gardening, but without putting newspaper or cardboard down first. Except in one of my beds. Well, apparently, after ripping out the overgrown plants left from the previous owner of the house (inundated with Lemon Balm and Vinca and Poison Ivy...which I suffered from for a month, no kidding), I also inherited the larvae from those nasty critters. LIVE & LEARN for sure! I will see what survives this year (I am concerned a little) and I continue to enjoy the renewed gardening hobby. Next gardening year, I will definitely be doing some things differently, and when this area is spent and all is harvested, it will definitely get treated for larvae....and get a better lasagna garden.
