So, Im pretty sure I dont have a fundamental misunderstanding of how municipal politics work, but WHY do we actually NEED a mayor? I know all the other cool cities are doing it (Im looking at you Calgary). Seriously thought, what function does the mayor serve thats not addressed by counsellors, MLAs, or MPs? I cant think of one use case where that role is actually required. Fiscal responsibility is out (Ford has been stripped of that for months, and the wheels havent fallen off anything). Crisis management is out (During the Ice storm, Ford was basically absent and while every other politician was busy pointing fingers OPG / TO Hydro were actually fixing the damn problem). Lobbying is out (Do we really need a town crier at the provincial and federal levels?) Whats left?
