So Im pulling out my soap box and stepping up, bear with me - TopicsExpress

So Im pulling out my soap box and stepping up, bear with me please. I just saw this article for these new dolls being marketed as natural looking and realistic they are called lammily dolls and are sold on a site by the same name. They are sold for $25.00 each and the maker says they are modeled after the average 19 year old girls appearance, you also have the option to by stickers to put on the dolls things like freckles, scars, tattoos, stretchable, cellulite and bruises. People are praising these dolls for depicting a real woman and promoting a positive body image for young girls, theyve even made a video of interviews with children showing kids prefer the doll. This is the biggest sack of crap that I have ever seen. Im sorry but a plastic doll(blonde hair, blue eyed, size one or otherwise) is not going to effect my daughters confidence in herself, that is a ridiculous notion. It is a toy like any other, shes not going to play with a tea set and feel bad that she is not British, a super hero and develop a complex cause wasnt bitten by a radioactive spider, or play with her animals and spend the rest of her life longing to walk on all fours, be covered in fur and shit outside. I could do this all day but you get the point. When did parents and society loose faith in creativity and imagination? I mean play is play, that is it. Its imagination that Barbie is simply a conduit for my daughter to explore her own reality. Ive been a petite size 3 and am now a voluptuous size 16 , I feel confident at both. My self image isnt based off a toy a played with as a child, its based of MYSELF, I am so much more then a waist size and you know who taught me that? My family, strong female role models, real people, with real words of guidance and encouragement . I never even considered modelling myself after a plastic $6.00 toy when I was surrounded by dynamic strong women. I will teach my daughter that her self confidence is something that comes from within and she will have a positive self image because of the way she is raised, the values I instill and the women that surround her. She isnt going to need a $25.00 odd shaped doll with creepy stickers to tell her she is acceptable or average(honestly because I dont want her to think of herself as either of those things). I trust Im going to be a great enough parent and mentor to her that she isnt going to need to look at her toys as role models.
