So, Im vegetarian. I think factory farms are probably one of the worst things humanity could decide to do with their present level if technology. Also, Im trying to popularize a reimagined Solstice holiday, and one of the things that needs doing is cultivating holiday foods. Things that you look forward to all year round that are extra special because you save them for Christmas or Thanksgiving. Like eggnog or turkey or those pumpkin lattes that Starbucks gives artificial scarcity. Most of this will be evolved organically in individual families. But its useful to give people the suggestion of what sort of things to try. Unfortunately, most of the things that lend themselves well to Solstice a Food are things like hardened cheeses and dried meat, ie the sort of thing Ancient people would have saved for winter. (For the atheist community, Spaghetti could be appropriate as a cultural injoke) Id prefer not to actively create cultural institutions that encourage meat consumption. But most people will be eating meat anyway and on the margin, Id rather the food be symbolically significant. A) curious what Vegan friends think. If you have suggestions for ritually significant Vegan Solstice food, thatd be cool B) more generally, anyone with suggestions or thoughts on creating food ritual, Nows the place.
