So, Ive been kicking around the idea of making a religious pilgrimage, something I find to be a lost act of faith in this day and age. Call me strange if you must, but its something I think I would get a lot out of. The only... issue, shall we say, is the presence of holy sites in the U.S. Its easy to look at a map of Christian Europe and the near east and identify all the holy sites from hundreds of years ago. However, I dont know of any truly holy sites in the U.S., so picking a place to travel to is sort of a guessing game. I could go to Old Swedes Church, in Wilmington, Delaware. Its really close--in fact its in my hometown--and its home to the oldest house of worship still in use as originally built. Or, perhaps I could go to St. Johns Episcopal Church, located in Hampton, Virginia. Established in 1610, its home to the most continuous practicing congregation in U.S. history. Then theres the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, located in St. Augustine, Florida. Americas oldest city is also home to the first church founded on (what would eventually become) U.S. soil. And yet theres also the San Miguel Mission in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Its said to be the oldest church in the U.S. How about all of you? Are there any places in the continental United States that you consider to be especially holy?
