So Monday is the anniversary of the resumed pine-tar game from 1983. People often forget that the pine-tar out was overturned because Lee McPhail concluded the rule was about keeping bats clean so they didnt muck up the baseballs, not about any advantage to the hitter. When the game resumed, the ever-obstinate Billy Martin appealed that Brett missed some bases which had to be rebuffed by signed affidavits from the original umpire crew. There are some other interesting side stories to this main event as well that I write about in my book The Rules Abide: The Thinking Fans Guide to Baseball Rules (With History, Humor and a Few Big Words). Using some iconic baseball stories and history, plus my own observations, Ive taken a completely unique approach to teaching the deep rules of the game. You might be surprised by what you dont know - even if youve watched and played the game your whole life. Its been a while since Ive mentioned The Rules Abide here, but soon enough the playoffs will be here with its annual surprise controversies - last year obstruction, the year before, the infield fly rule...in baseball you always see something youve never seen before. If you like the idea of looking at the game from a new angle, please check it out. The ebook is practically free! Thanks for taking a minute to read this! JT - Encinitas, CA amazon/dp/149224175x
