So, Strife is a nearly forgotten, hybrid FPS/RPG that was made - TopicsExpress

So, Strife is a nearly forgotten, hybrid FPS/RPG that was made with a heavily modified version of the Doom engine. It sold somewhat decently, but was quickly overshadowed due to the fact that it was released in May of 1996; four months after Duke Nukem 3D, and one month before Quake. Luckily, it has recently been given a new life on Steam (and soon on GOG). [Skip to TL;DR if you dont want to read the next three lengthy paragraphs] Despite its sudden downfall, Strife has gathered a cult following amongst old CRPG and Doom fans alike, even being made to work with modern source ports like ZDoom despite the original source code being lost. The games original developer, Rogue Entertainment, went belly up back in late 2000, mere months after releasing the cult hit American McGees Alice. Night Dive Studios, the company that has become notorious for acquiring licenses to old and almost forgotten PC games and re-releasing them on digital platforms like Steam and GOG (including the entirety of Humongous Entertainments library after Atari bit the big one), just a couple days ago released Strife on Steam as The Original Strife: Veterans Edition, which adds a number of features to the original game and makes a number of improvements to gameplay. Its a bit pricey for the $10 price tag, but considering that this new version actually has a properly optimized source port attached to it that offers full HD 1080p resolution and Xbox 360 controller support, its well worth it in my opinion. The video below is from a guy named Ross Scott, a GMod machinima creator most well known for his Freemans Mind and Civil Protection videos on Youtube. He has a third series he started making a little over a year ago called Rosss Game Dungeon, a review series about old, forgotten and/or flawed video games that are worth looking at for one reason or another, with some editorial-styled ramblings thrown in for entertainment and/or informative purposes. This particular episode is about Strife, the game its engine is based off of [Doom], and whats good and bad about the game since this game does have some flaws. [TL;DR] Yeah, Strife isnt perfect, but its still fun overall. If you like the gameplay of Doom and like RPGs in the vein of the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, youll enjoy Strife. Its digital release, The Original Strife: Veteran Edition costs $10 on Steam, and will be coming soon to GOG.
